1. Give teens space, especially from younger children.
2. Provide teens privacy.
3. Show respect for teens by:
-Include teens in making family plans.
-Include teens in family meetings and making decisions when possible.
-Inform teens of family changes or family events so they do not hear from another family member first.
-If their biological parent is not available, give clear explanations, don’t sugar coat or make up stories.
4. Let their biological parent discipline. Build rapport before disciplining a teen. Go slowly in developing step-parent role.
5. Don’t take things personally.
6. Understand that teens need adult allies and you are in a position to be there for your step-teen in this role.
